The European Science Fiction Society is an international organisation
of SF professionals and fans who are committed to promoting Science Fiction
in Europe and European Science Fiction worldwide.
The organisation was founded at the first European Science Fiction Convention,
Eurocon, which was held in 1972 in Trieste, Italy. Since that time, the
organisation has organized European Science Fiction Conventions (Eurocons)
at least every two years. The organisation also administrates the European
SF Awards.
We hope these pages will give you an idea of the activities of the European
SF Society and the European SF Awards.

Do you plan to bid for running an Eurocon? Take some time to read:
How To Run A Eurocon
This guide is purely guidance: it is not formally part of the ESFS constitution (which does contain some binding parameters on Eurocon organisers). The version here is a draft that arose out of an open consultation following ESFS' 2006 business meeting in Kiev. Following the consultation further comment was provided by two Eurocon regulars (one an ESFS Officer and the other an SF professional). Following discussion at the ESFS 2007 business meeting in Copenhagen it was agreed that the ESFS Officers would arrange with the guide's compilers some further minor changes. This project was conducted with the assistance of the Science Fact & Science Fiction Concatenation. Comments are most welcome especially from those considering submitting a bid. Depending on comments received in the next few years -- be they corrections, further suggestions or comments on usefulness -- this guidance may be refined or expanded. (Comments may be sent to ESFS via the adress at the bottom of this page and/or to eurocon [dot] guide [at] concatenation [dot] org.)
ESFS OFFICERS
As re-elected at Copenhagen 2007, Denmark:
Chairman: David Lally (Ireland)
Secretary: Bridget Wilkinson (England)
Treasurer: Piotr Cholewa (Poland)
Vice Chairman: Roberto Quaglia (Italy)
UPCOMING EUROCONS
SF Conventions (Cons) are the very lifeblood of SF fans and fandom. They allow fans to meet, interact and discuss their favourite subject : SF (Science Fiction, which includes fantasy and horror etc). The following Conventions have been designated by ESFS (according to its Statutes) as either the European SF Convention (Eurocon) or as a "Euroconference" for the year mentioned.
Con Organisers : see our Statutes about proposing your own Con as a future Eurocon - that for 2011 is due to be bid for at Eurocon 2009.
The following Notes apply to these listings : All dates are shown as day then (in Roman numerals) the Month so eg 8th March is shown as 8 III (not 08/03 which could be confused as 3rd of August); (1) the National SF Con (NatCon) of that country or countries concerned, for that year; (2) for Italy; (3) jointly for Czech Rep and for Slovakia; (4) for Poland; (5) for the UK ; (6) The SF Con held around or near to the Baltic, usually annually); (7) for Sweden; * (in front of entire entry) = nothing confirmed, (in front of other items eg date/venue) = only that aspect not confirmed, all else confirmed.
If travelling in any of these areas during their Con dates, send an advance e-mail to the organisers : they will make you very welcome at their Con.
[ A much fuller listing of SF Cons world wide including Worldcons, EuroCons, National, regional and local Cons) can be found in English on the following websites by using this key search word "+SF con" after these key search words :
"ansible", "locus", "wilf james", "concatenation" ]

NEWS OF EUROCONS
News of forthcoming Eurocons can be found on respective individual Eurocon websites (see above previous section). A number of websites do carry SF news (you can Google to find these) and a few do carry Eurocon and ESFS news, but the Science Fact & Science Fiction Concatenation has for some years regularly maintained a special section on 'Eurocon/Worldcon' news on its seasonal science fiction news page.

ESFS promotes SF in European countries where it can (and also further afield) and so here's a page where we list World SF events and the NatCons in various European countries -- where known
